Have you ever been driving through the area and thought, “I wish we had a [fill in the blank] store here?” Most of us have. And, while it would be ideal to attract any and every business we want, the reality is that there’s a strategy behind why some cities consistently rise to the top of site selectors’ lists.
Cities don’t grow or attract new businesses by chance. Their success is typically driven by a combination of economic strength, geographic advantages, and supportive institutions that make them appealing places to invest, work, and live. Among these factors, the role of a city as a regional center is especially important.
Cities like Alexandria, which serve as hubs for a broader surrounding area, tend to outperform others when it comes to attracting growth and sustaining new business development.

They may provide cultural institutions, healthcare services, shopping, and entertainment that smaller towns lack, while still being more accessible and less expensive than major metropolitan areas. This makes them attractive not only to businesses but also to employees, entrepreneurs, and families.
Finally, regional centers tend to have stronger institutional support, including local governments, economic development organizations, and financial institutions that actively promote growth. These entities often provide incentives, streamline regulations, and invest in strategic planning to attract and retain businesses.
